How to Tell When You Need New Windows?
Do you think you may need new windows but you aren’t exactly sure? Below is a do-it-yourself window inspection guide for homeowners to use to figure out whether you may need new windows. This guide will focus on several telltale signs:
- high energy bills
- Performing a roof check on the exterior of your home
- And, last but not least what to do if you do in fact identity roof damage
Do you have High Energy Bills?
Stand next to several windows throughout your home on a typical cold day in the Winter. Is it noticeably colder than the rest of your house. If you think the answer is yes, perform the candle test. Light a candle and and hold it close to not only the window frame but also around the perimeter of the window sills. If you notice the candle flicker or the smoke moving, there is a good chance drafts are coming through the exterior of your home.
Do your Windows Operate Smoothly?
You should also be checking your windows every so often to make sure they operate correctly. You are probably already doing this throughout the year as it is. But, you should check to see if windows open and close properly, Check to see if the locking mechanisms lock and unlock properly. If you have single-hung windows, be sure to raise and lower the bottom window. If you have double-hung windows, be sure to raise and lower both the bottom and top windows.
Are your Frames Decaying or Leaky?
This is probably the most obvious sign for most homeowners as it is pretty clear to see even with an untrained see. If you notice paint chipping off from the window frame there is a good chance there is a moisture issue.
Are your Windows not Soundproof?
Simply stand by your windows and listen to whatever you can outside. Can you hear vehicles drive by? Can you hear the neighbors talking?
Can you See Condensation?
If you see fog or condensation in between two panes of glass the seals of your windows may have broken.
